The team was formed when Cal Rockefeller, an advertising executive from Monroe, Louisiana, acquired the Texas League franchise and shifted it to Victoria after Memphis, Tennessee officials acquired a Class AAA franchise in the International League, displacing Memphis' popular New York Mets farm club. Based in southeastern Texas, the Toros played their home games at Riverside Stadium (also known as Toros Stadium), a ballpark that had opened in May 1947 and had previously hosted other minor league teams in Victoria. Despite their brief existence, the Toros achieved remarkable success on the field. They posted the best record in the eight-team Texas League that season (79-57), winning the Eastern Division title and ultimately becoming champions when they completed a three-game sweep of the El Paso Diablos in a best-of-5 series on September 8, 1974 to claim the Texas League championship. The roster featured promising talent, including eleven players who eventually made it to the Major Leagues, though only one - starting pitcher Nino Espinosa - enjoyed a lengthy stay.
